Student receives $10K grant from NASA for Venus exploration project

Jaclyn Ahearn Senior Executive Assistant to the President | Stony Brook University

Edwin Tan, a mechanical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, has been awarded a $10,000 grant to support his team's project proposal in NASA's L’SPACE training program. The program offers students practical experience in developing project proposals through teamwork.

Tan is involved in designing a Venus Aerobot aimed at exploring Venus' atmosphere. Over the summer, he collaborated with students and engineers from various states, gaining valuable insights into proposal evaluation and Aerobot development. As lead systems engineer, Tan's efforts contributed to securing the grant for building a prototype.

The year-long program started in August 2024 and requires Tan's team to develop an operational prototype for NASA's evaluation. The team works across multiple states, coordinating efforts and shipping components to Maryland as part of their project development.

This accomplishment underscores Tan’s dedication to innovation and collaboration within this unique program opportunity.
