William Floyd Elementary hosts fundraiser for St. Baldrick's childhood cancer research

Kevin Meyer Board Member | William Floyd School District

William Floyd Elementary School is set to host a "Brave the Shave" event on March 14, from 9 am to 12 pm. This initiative is part of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation's efforts to combat childhood cancer. Participants will have their hair shaved off, with all proceeds directed toward cancer research.

Dr. Keith Fasciana, principal of William Floyd Elementary School, will join volunteers in shaving their heads. The event will receive support from the William Floyd High School Barbering Academy, led by instructor Cara Cliffe.

Over recent years, the William Floyd School District has raised over $10,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation through similar events.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation began in 1999 with a goal of raising $17,000 by shaving 17 heads. Since then, it has accumulated more than $352 million for childhood cancer research. Their work has contributed to FDA approval of a new drug that significantly improves cure rates for high-risk neuroblastoma patients.

The WFHS Barbering Academy is part of an award-winning Career and Technical Education (CTE) program offering eight academies and five pathways in business and technology fields. Students are trained in various barbering techniques as well as business skills needed for entrepreneurship.

William Floyd High School offers CTE pathways in areas such as Accounting and Engineering and provides academy offerings including Automotive and Culinary Arts among others.
