Stony Brook University increases food pantry donations amid rising demand

Stony Brook University is actively addressing food insecurity on campus through the efforts of its Finance & Administration Division. For the second year in a row, this division participated in the Food Pantry Adopt-a-Week campaign during Valentine's Day week. The initiative encouraged colleagues to "DARE to CARE" by contributing to food disparity solutions.

This year, participants collected 836.58 pounds of food donations, marking a 19.5% increase from last year's total of 700 pounds. Jed Shivers, Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration, expressed his admiration for the team's dedication: “I am incredibly inspired by the way our Finance & Administration teammates came together to support the Food Pantry Adopt-a-Week campaign."

The university's Food Pantry served over 4,000 students during the fall 2024 semester alone, doubling the number served in previous semesters combined. This rise underscores growing concerns about food insecurity within the community.

Kathryn McCombs, a representative of the SBU Food Pantry, acknowledged these contributions: “We are so thankful to the F&A division." The university encourages others to adopt weeks at the pantry and continue supporting their peers.

Special thanks were extended to several team members who contributed significantly to this year's success.
