Fifth graders honor loved ones with heartfelt tributes at Tangier Smith Elementary

Lorraine Mentz Trustee | William Floyd School District

Fifth-grade students at Tangier Smith Elementary School recently participated in a special event to honor their loved ones. The event took place on Valentine's Day, where families and friends were invited for a writing celebration. Unbeknownst to the guests, they were the subjects of the students' writing assignments.

The students from Mr. DeMasi, Ms. Dunne, Ms. Mason, Mr. Melandro, and Ms. Montalto’s classes spent time crafting tributes about their chosen loved ones. These writings detailed personal stories and characteristics that made these individuals special to them.

During the celebration, each guest was called to the front of the classroom as students read their heartfelt tributes aloud. The emotional readings moved many participants and observers to tears. After each reading, students shared hugs with their loved ones and presented them with a framed copy of their speech.

The event provided a meaningful opportunity for students to express love and appreciation for those closest to them.
