Zariel Macchia triumphs at New York State Indoor Track & Field Championships

Zariel Macchia achieved her seventh state championship title at the New York State Track & Field Championships held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island on March 8, 2025. Representing William Floyd High School, Macchia excelled in the 3,000-meter run, securing first place with a national-best time of 9:21.73.

Macchia's journey to this victory was not without challenges. Initially disqualified from her final high school indoor track race due to a technicality involving college athletes in February, she successfully contested the decision in court to compete in the state championships.

Her performance marked her second consecutive indoor track & field state championship win following last year's success in the 1,000-meter run. Additionally, Macchia contributed to a team victory in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay by running the anchor leg of 1,500 meters alongside three top runners from Suffolk County. She also participated in the 1,000-meter run and finished third with a time of 2:46.95.

Looking ahead, Macchia and her teammates are set to compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York City this weekend. She will participate in multiple events including the 5K and mile races as well as the 1,600-sprint medley relay with teammates Samantha Seaman, Allana Morgan, and Angelle Sainteus. Her sister Coral Macchia will also compete in the middle school mile event.
