Stony Brook University student Victor Canela has been recognized with the Norman R. McConney Jr. Award for Student Excellence, an honor given to 50 students statewide in SUNY’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). The award, now in its sixth year, acknowledges EOP students for their academic achievements and perseverance.
The award is named after Norman R. McConney Jr., a University at Albany graduate and former assistant dean for special programs at SUNY. McConney played a significant role in establishing the EOP as a statewide initiative alongside former Assembly Deputy Speaker Arthur O. Eve.
Pamela Matzner, director of Stony Brook’s Educational Opportunity Program/Advancement on Individual Merit (EOP/AIM), praised Canela: “Victor Canela embodies the resilience, dedication, and excellence that define Stony Brook’s EOP students. His recognition as a recipient of the SUNY Norman R. McConney Jr. Award is a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and commitment to academic and personal growth.”
Chancellor John B. King Jr. emphasized the impact of the program: “I am constantly reminded of the profound impact SUNY’s Educational Opportunity Program has had on countless lives... At SUNY, we are immensely grateful for the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the Legislature who continue to support this transformative program that ensures students not only start but have the support to complete their degrees.”
Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie ’90 also congratulated the recipients: “Your dedication and perseverance have led you to this moment... We trust that you will draw inspiration from his legacy, striving for excellence while inspiring generations to come.”
Since its founding in 1967, the EOP has offered access, academic support, and financial assistance to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including many first-generation college attendees. Over its 58-year history, it has served more than 85,000 students.
