Stony Brook University showcases research at Albany expo for first time

John B. King, Jr. Chancellor | Stony Brook University

SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. and presidents of the four university centers within SUNY recently organized a research expo at the New York State Capitol for the first time. This event, held on March 18, featured Stony Brook University faculty from various disciplines including chemistry, computer science, engineering, quantum education, and psychiatry.

The purpose of the expo was to present research to state legislators and staff, highlighting transformative work conducted at Stony Brook University and emphasizing the necessity for funding research facilities.

“We had a successful trip to Albany advocating for our students and for much-needed resources to support Stony Brook’s efforts as a flagship public research university,” stated SBU Interim President Richard McCormick. He noted that five faculty members presented groundbreaking research in fields such as neuroscience, physics, medical device development, artificial intelligence, and energy storage. McCormick added that the faculty’s contributions significantly bolstered his advocacy efforts with state legislators and officials.

The event was aligned with the annual SUNY and University Center Presidents Advocacy Day, aimed at supporting SUNY’s state budget priorities. The schedule included discussions with the Governor’s Senior Leadership Team, the Senate Majority Leader, the Assembly Speaker, and the Higher Education Committees of both legislative chambers.
