Stony Brook students engage in volunteer efforts for National Volunteer Month

Richard L. McCormick Interim President | Stony Brook University

April marks National Volunteer Month, and students at Stony Brook University are taking the initiative to support causes important to them and their communities. This engagement provides invaluable experiences, while also benefiting those in need.

The Center for Service Learning and Community Service has highlighted stories showcasing Stony Brook students' volunteer efforts and their impact on the community.

Senior Krista Pulisic, co-executive chair of Wolfiethon, works with the B+ Positive Foundation to support children with cancer. Wolfiethon organizes service events and a Dance-a-thon to raise funds, and Pulisic mentions how rewarding it is to see growth in children like Sabrina, Alpha Sigma Alpha’s B+ Positive Hero. She expressed how “she really feels like she has a home with us.” Last year, Wolfiethon raised over $80,000, with aspirations for more this year.

Project Sunshine supports families facing health challenges. Matthew Kumar, a senior Health Science major, serves as internal vice president and organizes online volunteering with hospitals like Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital. Reflecting on a Halloween Teleplay event, Kumar shared, “all the kids dressed up in their costumes, and they wanted to show off their costumes.” He joined Project Sunshine for its community and for taking his mind off schoolwork while giving back. He encourages students to attend open events like the Holiday Card making or Masquerade Ball.

Senior Health Science major Xuan Wan volunteers as a crisis counselor at Crisis Text Line. She spends two hours weekly helping those in mental health crises. Wan was drawn to the role for its flexibility and the positive impact she can have, stating that “what [the texter] needed was someone to listen to her and not give her solutions.” She admits the role challenged her comfort zone but found support from fellow volunteers.
