The Stony Brook University Campus Store has undergone a significant transformation, with a complete remodel and rebranding initiative led by the Auxiliary Services Association (ASA). Previously known as Shop Red, the store is now called the SBU Campus Store and serves as the university’s official outlet for licensed apparel, school supplies, custom merchandise, and gifts.
The redesigned space features a new layout with brighter interiors and areas designed for students to gather. There is an open lounge near Starbucks and soft seating throughout the store. The goal of these changes is to create a welcoming environment that functions as both a retail space and social hub.
Karla Gibbs has been appointed director of retail operations at the SBU Campus Store. Gibbs brings over 20 years of experience in retail management at Stony Brook University, including previous roles at the Southampton campus café and East Campus store.
Diana Kubik, executive director of ASA, commented on the vision behind the redesign: “We want the store to be an inclusive gathering space that offers a welcoming environment with brighter lighting, refreshed interiors, improved traffic flow, efficient checkout, and an intuitive, guest focused layout. Our exceptional team is committed to creating a memorable shopping experience where every member of the Seawolf community feels valued and supported.”
One notable addition is an inspirational gifts section offering items such as stationery, mugs, eco-friendly totes, and handcrafted products made by Stony Brook students who participate in ASA artisan markets. This gives students opportunities to sell their creations—including lip glosses and jewelry—within the campus community.
The checkout process has also changed with mobile point-of-sale technology replacing traditional cash registers. Staff can now assist customers anywhere in the store to help reduce wait times.
Since taking over direct operation of the store in July 2024, ASA has expanded Stony Brook’s licensing program through new branded merchandise developed by Denise Salzman, assistant director of marketing and communications. Exclusive T-shirt collections designed by Salzman have become popular among students and alumni. The fall lineup includes custom photo mugs, magnets, coasters, varsity jackets, and an updated T-shirt wall displaying her latest designs.
Salzman collaborated with ASA staff accountant Hannah Van Middelem on athletic apparel aimed at connecting more closely with student-athletes. Van Middelem explained: “I felt it was important to deepen the store’s connection to student-athletes and the broader fanbase,” stated Van Middelem. “As former collegiate athletes, Denise and I brought our firsthand experience of the athletic mindset into the design process. We know how vital it is for athletes to wear apparel that not only looks great but also reflects their dedication and team pride. Our goal was to create pieces that perform well and also resonate with all Seawolves, capturing the energy and spirit that unite our community.”
Student-designed apparel is another feature at SBU Campus Store; participants receive $5 for each shirt sold—a program intended to provide real-world experience while showcasing student talent across campus outlets.
“By hosting T-shirt design contests each semester, we have empowered students to tell their story about what Stony Brook means to them. This exclusive merchandise creates products that students want, and we are proud to showcase their work through retail signage, displays, and marketing materials,” stated Salzman.
The SBU Campus Store also provides custom ordering services for departments or clubs seeking personalized apparel options under official licensing agreements.
Director of Engagement Dawn Villacci oversees efforts focused on student engagement through events like workshops or focus groups intended to ensure feedback from shoppers shapes future offerings at SBU Campus Store.
