Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars visit Flatiron Institute for Summer Bridge Program

The third group of students in the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program visited the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute in New York City on July 31. This visit was a part of a six-week Summer Bridge Program that helps incoming first-year students in science, technology, engineering, and math prepare for their college careers.

During their time at the institute, 42 scholars participated in discussions with researchers from several scientific fields such as neuroscience, computational biology, computational astrophysics, and computational quantum physics. The students also had lunch with interns from earlier cohorts at the New York Structural Biology Center and toured the Centers for Computational Biology and Mathematics.

David Spergel, PhD, President of the Simons Foundation, addressed the group during opening remarks. “At the Simons Foundation, we believe that great science can transform our understanding of everything. Our goal is to support scientists, and the reason we are supporting this program is that we think you are part of the future of science,” said Spergel. “Stony Brook will produce some great scientists, and we wanted to help build this program to give you the opportunities to be one of them.”
