Suffolk County Community College announces James J.A. Mercer art exhibit in Brentwood

Suffolk County Community College will host an exhibition titled “James J. A. Mercer: Without Thinking” at its Sagtikos Art Gallery on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. The show, featuring paintings and animations by New York-based artist James J. A. Mercer, will run from November 19, 2025, to January 26, 2026.

An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m., during which Mercer will give a presentation about his work and discuss his creative process. The event is open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

The exhibition highlights Mercer's animations and paintings that examine themes such as perception, memory, and abstraction. His art combines traditional techniques with digital media.

Mercer holds an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His artwork has been displayed at several venues including Meliksetian Briggs, Picture Theory, the Roswell Museum, Pioneer Works, and The Drawing Center. Additionally, his collaborative animations with Yifan Jiang have been featured at events like the International Film Festival Rotterdam and Slamdance.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m., with special Saturday openings on December 6 and December 13 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional times can be arranged by appointment. Admission is free.
