Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been recognized by Healthgrades for its clinical care in stroke, cardiac, and joint replacement services. The annual evaluation by Healthgrades reviews mortality and complication rates for over 30 common conditions and procedures at about 4,500 hospitals across the United States. SBUH's assessment includes data from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

For 2026, SBUH was ranked among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for stroke care and placed in the top 10% for cardiac and joint replacement care. Within New York State, it was listed among the top three hospitals for Stroke Care, Cranial Neurosurgery, and Neurosciences.

“These national honors from Healthgrades reflect not only our outstanding clinical outcomes, but also our commitment to translating research and innovation into world-class patient care,” said William A. Wertheim, MD, MBA, Executive Vice President of Stony Brook Medicine. “This recognition underscores the remarkable collaboration and dedication that define Stony Brook Medicine.”

Carol A. Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital added: “We are honored to be recognized once again by Healthgrades for our commitment to delivering the highest quality care to our patients. These national distinctions reflect the exceptional dedication, skill, and teamwork of our physicians, nurses, and staff across every discipline.”

In addition to these rankings, SBUH received Excellence Awards in cardiac care, neurosciences, pulmonary care, joint replacement and gastrointestinal services. The hospital also achieved five-star ratings—the highest level—for critical care as well as other treatments.

Alana Biggers, MD, MPH from Healthgrades stated: “Healthgrades’ specialty awards identify the nation’s top-performing hospitals in key service areas, helping consumers find high quality care tailored to their specific needs. We’re proud to recognize Stony Brook University Hospital for its consistently superior outcomes in key service areas.”

According to a recent analysis by Healthgrades covering data from 2022 through 2024 Medicare patients nationwide (MedPAR), if all hospitals performed similarly to those with five-star ratings during this period an estimated 230,466 lives could have been saved while approximately 156,797 complications might have been avoided.

Stony Brook University Hospital is Long Island’s main academic health center with 628 beds serving as a tertiary care center and Regional Trauma Center. It houses specialized institutes such as the Heart Institute and others, including Suffolk County’s only Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center.

Healthgrades operates as a leading platform connecting patients with doctors or hospitals and is part of RVO Health. RVO Health includes several major online health brands that reach more than 100 million visitors each month.
