Stony Brook University has welcomed its largest incoming class of first-year students in its 66-year history. The university saw a 13% increase in first-year undergraduate student enrollment for the Fall 2024 term, with a total of 4,042 new students compared to 3,569 in Fall 2023. Additionally, there were 1,334 new transfer students in Fall 2024, marking a 4% increase from the previous fall.
Holtsville woman indicted for alleged car theft and bank robbery
Nina Cahill, a 42-year-old resident of Holtsville, has been indicted on multiple charges, including Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree. The indictment follows allegations that she stole a vehicle, used it to rob a bank, and led police on two car chases, one of which resulted in the injury of a Suffolk highway patrol officer.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has announced a $1.05 million award to Fusheng Wang, professor in the departments of Biomedical Informatics and Computer Science, and his team, including Richard Rosenthal, MD, professor and addiction psychiatrist from the Department of Psychiatry. Their research is focused on machine learning models to predict patient outcomes.
William Floyd School District announces policy on student information disclosure
The William Floyd School District has issued a notification regarding the release of student information under the No Child Left Behind Act. According to §9528 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (the “ESEA”) (20 U.S.C. §7908), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act, the district is required to disclose, upon request, the names, addresses, and telephone listings of high school students to military recruiters.

Brooklyn man found guilty of second-degree murder for shooting during attempted robbery
Basheer Vinson, 29, of Brooklyn, has been found guilty of second-degree murder and other charges in connection with a 2020 attempted robbery and shooting that resulted in the death of Mark Birthwright, 26, of Bay Shore. The verdict was announced by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney following a jury trial.

Joe Verghese named chair at Renaissance School's neurology department
Joe Verghese, a physician researcher and educator, has been appointed as the Chair of the Department of Neurology at the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University. His appointment, effective October 14, was announced by Peter Igarashi, MD, Knapp Dean of RSOM. Dr. Verghese is known for his expertise in gait and cognition related to aging.

Zariel Macchia, a senior on the William Floyd High School cross-country team, has been recognized as one of the top 25 girls’ cross-country runners by Newsday. The publication noted her impressive achievements: “She won the Federation title in 17:59.4 and finished second in Class A, and in the merge, in 17:44.3 at the public-school state championships. The BYU commit, who already has a Class A title to her name, is the fastest runner in the state…and one of the fastest girls in the country.”

New York couple sues Nassau County over unlawful firearm seizure
John and Elizabeth Burke have filed a federal lawsuit against Nassau County alleging unconstitutional seizure and retention of their firearms following a minor incident in December 2017. The couple claims violations of their Second and Fifth Amendment rights and seeks declaratory and equitable relief from the court.

New Clerk on Board at Patchogue-Medford School District
At last night's Board of Education meeting, the Board approved Theresa DeLeva as District Clerk, effective September 30th. Ms. DeLeva has been the senior cook of Patchogue-Medford High School's central kitchen for approximately eight years and held other food service roles in the District prior to that assignment. As a resident who participates in numerous District and building committees, she is devoted to continuing to support our District and community in this new role.
