Stony Brook Collaborative for the Earth announces fall town hall events

Wendy Pearson Vice President for Strategic Initiatives | Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University faculty and staff are invited to sign up for three town halls hosted by the Stony Brook Collaborative for the Earth (C4E) this fall.

C4E was established in September 2023 to build on Stony Brook’s academic strengths in areas related to climate change and the environment. Its work is guided by a desire to support the health of our planet through breaking down barriers between scholarly disciplines, between environmental problems and their solutions, and between campus and community.

C4E works closely with the Office of Climate and Sustainability Programming, also established in the fall of 2023, to reimagine approaches to education in climate, sustainability, clean energy, and environmental justice. The office also aims to connect Stony Brook students, faculty, and staff to initial New York Climate Exchange activities.

The three upcoming town halls will allow the SBU community to learn more about C4E’s work over the past year and discuss how to get involved in future initiatives and opportunities afforded by C4E and the New York Climate Exchange. These town halls will be highly interactive and are an opportunity for faculty and staff to help shape future research and educational programming. Lunch will be provided at each event.

C4E has had an active first year, hosting a forum on offshore wind power, establishing the “C4E Presents” podcast hosted by C4E Director Heather Lynch, organizing cross-campus interest groups on various topics, among other initiatives.

Next month, C4E is hosting a field trip for students, faculty, and staff from multiple departments to the Block Island Offshore Wind Farm. Additionally, C4E is helping present “Science on Stage: Climate Edition,” where professional playwrights will engage with a Stony Brook University researcher working on climate change to create three short plays. Other events are planned for the coming academic year.
