Stony Brook University is calling on its community to participate in the annual Car Free Day Long Island on Sunday, September 22. The Stony Brook University Office of Sustainability is encouraging students to forego their cars and instead use alternative transportation methods such as trains, buses, bicycles, carpools, or walking for the day.

Since 2013, Stony Brook University has been an active participant in Car Free Day Long Island, with more than 500 participants each year. Currently, the university leads with 854 pledges and aims to reach a total of 1,000 pledges.

Participants who pledge will be entered into a drawing for various prizes including a Giant Escape 3 bike, a Liv Alight 3 bike, a 10-trip All-Access Long Island Pass from the LIRR, and an annual Bike Share membership.

"Help us recognize the positive impact that alternative forms of transportation can have on our environment and bring Stony Brook University to the top of the pledge chart in this year’s competition," stated the Office of Sustainability.

For more information about Car Free Day Long Island or to make a pledge, individuals are encouraged to visit the event's website or contact the Office of Sustainability.

The Stony Brook community is invited to join in this initiative and embrace car-free transportation on September 22.
