Suffolk Community College Foundation continues scholarships for local Latino students

Edward T. Bonahue, Ph.D. President | Suffolk County Community College

The Suffolk Community College Foundation has announced the continuation of two scholarship programs to support students in the Patchogue/Medford area, including those from Latino backgrounds. These scholarships aim to help students facing financial barriers as they pursue their education at Suffolk County Community College.

The David M. Sperling “DREAM” Scholarship is designed for first-generation college students who do not meet federal or state residency requirements for financial aid. It is available to both full-time and part-time students enrolled in college-wide programs. Eligible candidates include those facing financial difficulties, lacking necessary documentation for federal or state financial aid, or in the process of obtaining U.S. residency or citizenship.

The Knapp Swezey Scholarship provides comprehensive support for students at Suffolk County Community College. This grant covers tuition and offers a range of services aimed at enhancing student success, such as academic guidance, tutoring, behavioral health support, peer mentoring, success coaching, and assistance with school supplies, transportation, and meal plans. Additionally, it supports access to career services including résumé assistance, interview preparation, and job search support.

Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system with over 21,000 students enrolled in more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The college has over 145,000 alumni and focuses on meeting regional employers' demands by successfully training and educating its students from high school through college into careers.

The Suffolk Community College Foundation's mission is to support student access to quality education and workforce training by providing scholarships, emergency student loans, and funding for program development. The Foundation awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year and engages alumni to maintain their connection with the college through events, philanthropy, mentorships, and internship opportunities.
