Stony Brook names Dr. Imoigele Aisiku chair of emergency medicine

Dr. Imoigele (Imo) Aisiku has been appointed as the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. His appointment, announced by Peter Igarashi, MD, Knapp Dean of RSOM, will commence on August 15.

Dr. Aisiku brings extensive experience from his tenure at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He served in multiple roles including Vice Chair of the Division of Emergency Critical Care and Associate Professor. He also held positions such as Vice Chair for Diversity and Equity, Co-Director of the Brigham Critical Care Research Consortium, and Founder and Director of the Office of IDEaS in Emergency Medicine.

In 2021, Dr. Aisiku was recognized as an endowed Distinguished Chair in Health Equity and Diversity by Brigham and Women’s Hospital's President. This accolade made him the second endowed chairholder in their Emergency Department.

Apart from his academic roles, Dr. Aisiku is a founder and CEO of iDoc Telehealth Solutions, a company focusing on telemedicine services related to critical care. He also co-founded TiTAN EHR, an electronic medical records solution.

Dr. Igarashi expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Aisiku's new role: “We are thrilled that Dr. Aisiku will lead Stony Brook’s remarkable team of emergency physicians."

Dr. Aisiku earned his MD from UMass Chan Medical School before completing his residency in Emergency Medicine and fellowship in Critical Care at Emory University where he also obtained two master’s degrees.

His career highlights include being part of a team that saved former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' life after she was critically injured in 2011 while serving as Director of Neurocritical Care at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center’s Mischer Neuroscience Institute.

He is affiliated with several professional organizations such as the Neurocritical Care Society and has contributed significantly to research with over 75 publications supported by entities like NIH and the Department of Defense.
