Stony Brook’s 1974 club football team marks half-century milestone

Several players from Stony Brook University's 1974 club football team gathered on October 5 to celebrate the team's 50th anniversary. This group, instrumental in reviving football at the university, met during the Stony Brook Club Football Era Reunion.

Known as the Patriots at that time, the former players attended a game against Villanova and participated in a tour of the athletics facilities. The event included a pregame barbecue, which was also attended by Stony Brook University Interim President Richard McCormick.

“Reuniting with the guys was incredible,” said John Quinn ’77. “Some of us haven’t seen each other since the ’70s, but that camaraderie came right back. It was like we were in a time machine.”

Stony Brook's original football team disbanded in 1973, but determined players revived it as a club sport in 1974. Under new coach Fred Kemp, they independently managed all aspects of their team operations, including securing bleachers and equipment. “We fended for ourselves,” recalled Quinn. “We built our own field and managed our own equipment.” Their efforts led them to advance to the club national championship in 1975.

During this reunion event, the entire group received recognition at the game, with a tribute held for Kevin Kehoe ’77.
