Stony Brook University held a ceremony on November 7 to honor eight faculty members who were named SUNY Distinguished Professors in 2024. The event took place at the Sunwood Estate and celebrated the professors for their contributions to research, teaching, and service.

Interim President Richard McCormick praised the honorees for their work across various fields such as neurology, physics, mental health, and climate science. “To our new distinguished faculty, you are solving some of the world’s most challenging problems and complex questions in neurological disease, climate change, mental health, STEM, our understanding of the cosmos, the inner workings of the human body, and more,” he stated. “And just as important, you are inspiring the next generation to do the same.”

McCormick highlighted that these professors serve as role models for students at Stony Brook University. “Your presence here at Stony Brook enables you to provide an example for young scholars from all over the country and all over the world, from disadvantaged communities and wildly different backgrounds,” he remarked. “You are living proof that here, knowledge matters. You are paving the path forward for Stony Brook and for the world.”

The SUNY Distinguished Professorship is a prestigious academic title within the SUNY system awarded to those with national or international recognition who have made significant contributions to research or artistic achievement. The Distinguished Teaching Professorship honors those who demonstrate exceptional teaching skills.
