Stony Brook University has appointed Michael E. White as the interim director of the Waste Reduction and Management Institute (WRMI). The institute is part of the university's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) under Dean Paul Shepson's supervision.
White, who is currently a SoMAS adjunct faculty lecturer, also works with Winters Bros. Waste Systems of Long Island, LLC, recently acquired by Waste Management of New York. His professional background includes environmental law, solid waste management, municipal law, land use, natural resources, and freight rail transportation. He owns LI Strategies, Inc., an environmental planning consulting firm.
In his new role, White will lead WRMI to tackle complex waste issues on Long Island. The region faces high per capita waste generation rates and limited disposal capacity while needing improved recycling efforts.
WRMI aims to mitigate the societal impact of waste through research, education, policy analysis, and recommendations. The institute focuses on reducing waste generation via prevention strategies and educational programs while promoting recycling and innovative uses for waste materials.

Dean Paul Shepson added: "I am delighted that WRMI and Stony Brook will have the expert leadership of Michael White."
White expressed enthusiasm for his new position: "The WRMI is creating an action plan to address challenges related to Long Island waste." He emphasized collaboration with County Executive Romaine and the Long Island Supervisors’ Association led by Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.
WRMI recently received a $250,000 Regional Solid Waste Management Planning Grant from New York State through the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). This grant aims to assess solid waste management practices on Long Island and develop a comprehensive plan with achievable goals.
Established by the New York State Legislature in 1985, WRMI consists of engaged faculty and staff across Stony Brook University. An Advisory Board comprising experts from government, environmental organizations, and private industry will be reestablished to enhance the institute's impact.
