Suffolk County Community College has announced that Neftali Collazo, the College Associate Dean of Athletics and Special Events, has been chosen as a fellow for the SUNY Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI) 2025 cohort. The HLI is a nine-month leadership development program aimed at supporting emerging Hispanic and Latinx leaders in higher education.

Neftali Collazo, who has served Suffolk County Community College for over 15 years, manages the college's intercollegiate athletic programs and community outreach initiatives. His responsibilities also include overseeing athletic fields, facilities, and event management systems.

Chancellor John B. King Jr. of the State University of New York (SUNY) announced Neftali's selection along with nine other emerging Hispanic leaders and allies for the 2025 HLI cohort. These individuals are recognized for their commitment to inclusivity, leadership, and service in higher education.

Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, remarked on Neftali’s selection: “Neftali’s selection as a fellow for the Hispanic Leadership Institute is a testament to his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to our college. His involvement in the program will not only enhance his own growth as a leader but will also bring back valuable knowledge and perspectives that will benefit our students, faculty, and staff.”

Collazo expressed his gratitude: “I am honored to be selected for the 2025 Hispanic Leadership Institute,” he said. “This program will provide me with the opportunity to advance as a leader while also representing the importance of diverse voices in higher education."

The SUNY Hispanic Leadership Institute was launched in 2017 to support Hispanic and Latinx leaders within higher education institutions.

Suffolk County Community College is noted as the largest community college within the SUNY system with more than 21,000 students enrolled across various degree programs.
