Respiratory therapist Kylie Zahra's journey from student to professional at SBM

Carl Lejuez Provost | Stony Brook University

Kylie Zahra, a respiratory therapist at Stony Brook Medicine (SBM), has been recognized for her compassionate and caring nature, which is vital in her field. Her journey into respiratory therapy began during her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina: Wilmington. There, she focused on the basics of a career she would eventually pursue.

Reflecting on her career choice, Kylie stated, “Through looking at my options, respiratory was a hidden little niche that more people are now starting to become aware of, especially during and since the pandemic.”

Before securing a full-time position at SBM, Kylie gained experience as an intern equipment technician. This role allowed her to familiarize herself with the respiratory equipment she would later use professionally. The positive work environment and colleagues further motivated her to apply for her current job.
