John S. Hobart Elementary hosts interactive game show for students and teachers

Students at John S. Hobart Elementary School recently took part in an interactive assembly with Brain Wash Game Show Entertainment. This organization combines school curriculum with pop culture trivia in a TV-game show format to create an immersive experience. The event, sponsored by the John S. Hobart Elementary School PTO, featured students and teachers competing against each other in the MindStorm Game Show.

Therapy dog brings comfort to elementary schools

Over the past year, students at John S. Hobart Elementary School and William Floyd Elementary School have enjoyed visits from Kopa, a three-year-old golden retriever and certified therapy dog. Kopa is owned by school psychologists Joshua Zelin (Hobart) and Lorie Zelin (WFE).

Elementary students celebrate creativity on International Dot Day

Students in Ms. Strull’s class displayed their dots created on International Dot Day. Second-grade students in Ms. Strull, Mrs. Mocera, and Ms. Verderosa’s classes at William Floyd Elementary School recently celebrated "International Dot Day." They created their own dots using positive and negative space in the school STEM lab with Mrs. Baumiller.

William Floyd Board honors golf tournament organizers for raising over $625K in scholarships

The William Floyd Board of Education recently recognized members of Century 21 Cor-Ace Realty for their role in organizing the annual William Floyd Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. Since its inception, the tournament has raised and donated over $625,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from William Floyd.

William Floyd High School honors ten seniors with AP Capstone distinction

Ten seniors from William Floyd High School have earned the AP Capstone distinction on their future high school diplomas based on their performance on AP exams through May 2024. To receive this designation, students must score a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and a 3 or higher on four additional AP exams of their choosing.

William Floyd High School senior Nia Alicea has been named a Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. This honor is given to 34,000 students nationwide for their academic excellence.

William Floyd School District announces policy on student information disclosure

The William Floyd School District has issued a notification regarding the release of student information under the No Child Left Behind Act. According to §9528 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (the “ESEA”) (20 U.S.C. §7908), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act, the district is required to disclose, upon request, the names, addresses, and telephone listings of high school students to military recruiters.

William Floyd's Zariel Macchia named among top cross-country runners by Newsday

Zariel Macchia, a senior on the William Floyd High School cross-country team, has been recognized as one of the top 25 girls’ cross-country runners by Newsday. The publication noted her impressive achievements: “She won the Federation title in 17:59.4 and finished second in Class A, and in the merge, in 17:44.3 at the public-school state championships. The BYU commit, who already has a Class A title to her name, is the fastest runner in the state…and one of the fastest girls in the country.”

Floyd Academy Principal John DeBenedetto receives Long Island School Hero Award

John DeBenedetto, principal of Floyd Academy, has been selected to receive a Long Island School Hero Award presented by the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying. This award highlights Long Island educators K-12 and beyond who have been inspirational in their roles and continue to go above and beyond by modeling qualities such as empathy, patience, creativity, dedication, leadership, compassion, inclusivity, and respectfulness. Mr. DeBenedetto is one of just 22 educators being honored this year.

William Floyd hosts Longwood for Parkway Power Bowl XIII

On Saturday, September 14 at 1 pm, the William Floyd varsity Colonials will face the Longwood Lions in the annual Parkway Power Bowl. This marks the 13th Power Bowl matchup between these two rivals as they compete for bragging rights during the opening game of the fall 2024 season. The Colonials currently lead the Parkway Power Bowl series with a record of 10-2, including a 21-0 victory last year.
